Sewage backup: what to do first

Updated . This website does not dispatch help.

If sewage is on the floor, the useful work in the first hour is small and unglamorous: keep people out, stop adding water, and get a licensed plumber or the city utility on the phone. Everything else — the argument about whose pipe it is, the liner, the insurance photos — waits until the water stops rising.

SewerLineRescue.com is not an emergency service. Emailing the address on this site will not bring a truck. The domain is for sale. The steps below are general safety information so the wrong visitor still leaves with a next action.

Stay out of the water

Raw sewage carries bacteria that do not care that you own the house. Keep children, guests, and pets out of the room. Do not track it through the rest of the building. Shoes that walked through it stay at the door.

If the water may be touching outlets, appliances, or a breaker panel, do not wade in to flip switches. Leave the area. If you can kill power to that room from a dry location, do that. If you cannot, call the electric utility or the fire department and say sewage may be in contact with live equipment. A shock in standing water is a worse emergency than a ruined carpet.

Stop sending more water down

Toilets, showers, washers, and dishwashers all feed the same jammed pipe. Tell everyone in the building to stop using them. If you know where the main water shutoff is, and you can reach it without stepping in the backup, closing it keeps a running toilet from making the mess deeper. If a fixture is overflowing and you cannot shut the supply, that is part of what you tell the plumber on the phone.

Call the right desk

  • One building, sewage at the lowest fixture. A licensed plumber with a camera, not a handyman with a single cable and a guess.
  • Several homes on the street, or a city cleanout in the parkway that is surcharging. Your municipal utility or public works. The blockage may be theirs.
  • You are not sure which side of the property line failed. Call both. Plumbers diagnose private laterals. Cities diagnose mains. Arguing about the bill can happen after the water is down.
  • Someone is injured, or fumes are overwhelming in a small room. Leave and call emergency services. Sewer gas in a confined space is not a DIY ventilation project.

Document, then stop touching it

If you can photograph the backup from a dry doorway, do it before cleanup starts. Insurers ask what it looked like. Do not rearrange damaged belongings into a more dramatic pile, and do not throw porous materials away before the adjuster or the restoration crew has seen them unless the health department or a restoration lead tells you to.

Carpet pad, unfinished drywall, and insulation that soaked up sewage are rarely “fine once they dry.” Drying sewage into a pad is how an odor becomes a month. A restoration company that handles category-3 water is the usual next call after the line is flowing. A mop and a fan are not a remediation plan.

After it is flowing again

Clearing today’s clog is not the same as knowing why the line closed. When the immediate backup is over, the line still needs a camera from the cleanout to the city connection. Roots at a joint, a belly, or a collapse will book a return visit. Thefailure signs and thedifference between lining and bursting are written for that second conversation, when nobody is standing in the water.

Ask for the recording. Ask whether the city main was reached. Ask what should happen in the next week, not only what was cabled today.

Why this page exists on a domain listing

People will type this hostname while they are having a bad night. Sending them to a logo with no instructions would be worse than telling them the truth: call a plumber or the utility, and keep this sequence. Companies that actually roll trucks to these calls are who the name was made for. If that is your company, the domain is for sale by the owner. If it is your house, close this tab and make the phone call.

Questions during a backup

Should I mop up sewage myself?

No, not as a plan. Raw sewage is a health hazard. Porous materials — carpet pad, drywall, insulation — often have to be removed, not wiped. Many insurers and local health rules expect professional cleanup. Keep people and pets out until someone qualified says the area is safe.

Who do I call if more than one house is backed up?

Call the municipal utility or public works. A backup at several homes on the block is often the city main, not your private lateral. Also call a licensed plumber if you are not sure the blockage is outside your property line. Do not email this website — it cannot send a crew.
